A retired monitor can sit in a closet for years because it is bulky, awkward to move, and easy to put off. But when it is time to dispose old monitors safely, placing them at the curb or handing them to an unknown collector can create avoidable environmental, safety, and data-security concerns. A better approach starts with identifying the screen, checking what is connected to it, and arranging a responsible recycling route.
Why Old Monitors Need Special Handling
Monitors are electronic waste, not ordinary household trash. Their circuit boards, cables, plastics, and internal components contain materials that should be recovered or processed through appropriate recycling channels. Throwing a monitor into a dumpster can lead to damage during collection, broken glass, and improper downstream disposal.
The type of monitor matters. Older CRT monitors are the large, deep-backed models once common on office desks. They are especially heavy and contain leaded glass, so they should never be dismantled or placed in regular garbage. Flat-panel LCD monitors are lighter, but some older models use fluorescent backlights that may contain mercury. Newer LED monitors generally do not use those lamps, yet they still contain electronic components that require responsible handling.
For a household, one unused screen may feel like a minor item. For an office, a refresh project can leave dozens of monitors taking up valuable space. In both cases, organized collection and accountable recycling are safer than treating the equipment as scrap.
1. Identify the Monitor Type and Condition
Before arranging disposal, take a quick look at the monitor’s label and physical condition. Note the manufacturer, model number, screen size, and whether it is a CRT or flat-panel display. This helps a recycling provider prepare for the correct handling requirements, particularly for heavy CRT units or damaged screens.

Smart monitors, conference-room displays, monitors with built-in Wi-Fi, USB hubs, cameras, or network features may retain account details, saved networks, settings, or connected-device information.
Start by signing out of any apps or accounts and performing a factory reset if the monitor offers one. Remove USB drives, memory cards, wireless dongles, webcam accessories, and any external storage connected to the display. If you are clearing an office desk, check behind the monitor as well. A small USB receiver or portable drive is easy to miss.
For businesses, the bigger issue is often the equipment collected alongside the monitors. Old desktops, laptops, docking stations, servers, and external drives may contain sensitive customer, employee, financial, or operational data. Keep those assets separated and clearly identified so they receive the right data-wiping or physical destruction process rather than being treated as ordinary peripherals.

The safest disposal option depends on the monitor’s condition, quantity, and your ability to transport it. Avoid informal collectors who cannot explain where the equipment goes after pickup. A low-cost or free collection offer can be tempting, but responsible disposal requires more than removing items from your property. Ask whether the equipment will be sorted for reuse and recycling, how damaged displays are handled, and whether the collector works with appropriate downstream recycling partners.
For businesses, accountability matters just as much as convenience. Your company should be able to show that retired IT assets were handed over through a clear process. A documented pickup record supports internal asset tracking and gives office managers a more reliable trail than a verbal arrangement with a scrap buyer.
4. Prepare the Monitor for Collection
A little preparation makes pickup safer and faster. Disconnect power cords, HDMI or DisplayPort cables, adapters, monitor arms, and other accessories unless you intend to recycle them as part of the collection. Bundle loose cables separately so they do not become tangled around screens or create a tripping hazard during removal.
If the original box is available, it can provide useful protection, but it is not required. For a fragile flat-panel monitor, place a piece of cardboard or a clean towel against the screen during storage or transport. Do not stack heavy equipment on top of it. CRT monitors should be carried from the base by two people when necessary, not lifted by the screen or placed face-down.
Businesses can make the process smoother by grouping equipment in one accessible area and labeling assets that need special handling. If an office is disposing of monitors with computers, laptops, or storage devices, separate the data-bearing equipment from cable-only or display-only items. Data handling should be discussed before the equipment leaves your site. If hard drives or other storage devices are included, confirm whether secure wiping, drive destruction support, or other approved procedures are available.
